Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Teacher of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TODHH) to join our team at the School District of Philadelphia. Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver individualized instruction and interventions aligned with students' IEP goals.
  • Conduct academic and language assessments and contribute to IEP development and goal-setting.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, speech-language pathologists, interpreters, educational audiologists, and families to tailor strategies for student success.
  • Adapt and support access to general education curriculum; co-teach or provide push-in/pull-out services as appropriate.
  • Ensure maintenance and functionality of assistive devices (e.g., hearing aids, FM systems), and train both staff and students in their use.
  • Provide training and in-service sessions to staff, students, and families in areas including Deaf awareness, Deaf culture, communication strategies, and inclusive practices.
  • Teach self-advocacy, independence, and daily living skills as necessary, especially for transition-aged students.
  • Monitor, document, and report on student progress both academically and behaviorally; adjust support as needed.
  • Serve as an advocate and informational resource for the broader school community in supporting D/HH students.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Pennsylvania instructional certification with endorsement in Deaf and Hard of Hearing or Special Education. Emergency permit holders may be considered, provided they meet permit requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hearing impairments, communication development strategies, and special education laws.
  • Experience with assistive technology and ability to support its use effectively in educational settings.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills, with flexibility to travel between multiple school sites during the school year.
  • Preferred: familiarity with American Sign Language (ASL) and total communication philosophies.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move about the school environment.
  • Capability to lift and carry materials as needed.

As a school-based opportunity, this role requires:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must have the ability to move freely throughout school facilities, including classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and therapy spaces.
  • The position frequently involves bending, kneeling, crouching, and assisting students at their physical level (e.g., floor activities or adaptive seating).
  • The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally assist students with mobility or transfers.
  • Vision and hearing abilities must be sufficient to observe student behavior, read printed materials and digital screens, and communicate effectively.
  • The employee must be able to maintain visual and auditory attention to ensure student safety and engagement throughout the school day.
  • Work is typically performed in a school environment with moderate noise levels and frequent movement between classrooms or buildings.
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to body fluids or communicable diseases while performing job duties and must follow district and company safety protocols.
