Job Description

INVO is looking for a Certified Vision Teacher in Boston, MA. A Certified Vision Teacher plays a critical role in supporting students with visual impairments. Below is a general job description for this position:

Certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI)

Boston Public Schools, Boston, MA

Job Summary:

The Certified Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with visual impairments. The TVI works in collaboration with classroom teachers, special educators, related service providers, and families to ensure that students with visual impairments have access to the general education curriculum and can participate fully in school activities. The TVI also plays a key role in assessing students’ needs, developing individualized education programs (IEPs), and implementing appropriate accommodations and modifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conduct functional vision assessments and learning media assessments to determine the impact of visual impairment on the student’s educational performance.
    • Participate in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with visual impairments, including setting goals and determining necessary accommodations and services.
  • Instructional Services:
    • Provide direct instruction to students in areas such as Braille, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, and compensatory skills.
    • Adapt and modify general education materials to ensure accessibility for students with visual impairments.
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement instructional strategies that support the inclusion of students with visual impairments in general education settings.
  • Support and Collaboration:
    • Work closely with parents, guardians, and caregivers to support the educational needs of students with visual impairments.
    • Serve as a resource to school staff on best practices for teaching and supporting students with visual impairments.
    • Collaborate with orientation and mobility specialists, rehabilitation teachers, and other related service providers to ensure a comprehensive approach to the student’s education.
  • IEP Development and Implementation:
    • Develop, monitor, and adjust IEP goals and objectives for students with visual impairments.
    • Ensure that all services and supports outlined in the IEP are provided in a timely and effective manner.
  • Assistive Technology:
    • Assess and recommend assistive technology devices and services to support students with visual impairments.
    • Provide training and support to students, staff, and families in the use of assistive technology.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in the field of visual impairment.
    • Provide training and professional development to school staff on topics related to visual impairments and inclusive practices.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Certification:
    • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
    • Valid Massachusetts teaching license as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI).
    • Certification in Braille and assistive technology for visual impairments.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working with students with visual impairments, preferably in a school setting.
    • Experience in developing and implementing IEPs.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong knowledge of visual impairments and their impact on learning and development.
    • Proficiency in Braille, orientation and mobility techniques, and assistive technology for students with visual impairments.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • Commitment to inclusive education and the academic and social success of all students.

Working Conditions:

  • The position may require travel between multiple school sites within the district.
  • The role involves working directly with students, which may include physical activities related to orientation and mobility training.
